How SA freelancers stop scope creep (and get paid on time)

4 min read · General information, not legal advice

Quick answer

Define the deliverables, cap the revisions, take a deposit, charge interest on late payment, and only hand over IP once you're paid in full. Put all five in a signed service agreement before you start.

1. Write the scope down

List exactly what's included — and say that anything else is quoted separately.

2. Cap revisions

Two rounds is standard. Extra rounds are billed hourly.

3. Take a deposit

30–50% upfront filters out non-serious clients and funds your time.

4. Late-payment interest

South African law allows interest at the prescribed rate on overdue amounts — say so in your contract.

5. IP on payment

The client owns the work only once they've paid. It's the strongest incentive to pay.
