Questions

What must be on a tax invoice in South Africa?

For a full tax invoice (over R5 000): the words 'Tax Invoice', your name, address and VAT number, the buyer's name, address and VAT number, an invoice number and date, a description of the goods or services, quantity, and the value, VAT and total. Read our tax-invoice checklist guide for details.

Do I charge VAT if I'm not registered?

No. Only VAT vendors may charge VAT. Registration is compulsory once your taxable turnover exceeds the SARS threshold in a 12-month period.

What is the difference between a quotation and an invoice?

A quotation is an offer before work starts. An invoice asks for payment after the work or delivery.

Can I charge interest on late invoices?

Yes, if your terms say so. Without agreed terms you can usually claim interest at the prescribed rate. Our free late-fee calculator works it out.
