Questions

How is PAYE calculated in South Africa?

PAYE is worked out on your annual taxable income using SARS's tax brackets, minus the primary rebate (R17 235 for 2025/26), then divided by 12.

What is the tax-free threshold?

For 2025/26, people under 65 pay no income tax on up to R95 750 a year.

Does this include medical aid or pension?

No. Retirement contributions and medical aid credits lower your tax, so your actual payslip may show slightly less PAYE.
